Guided Biofilm TherapyDidsbury, AB

At Didsbury Dental Centre in Didsbury, AB, we want only the very best for our patients!

We understand that to some patients, a professional teeth cleaning can be an uncomfortable and sometimes painful experience! This is why we are very excited to have introduced “Guided Biofilm Therapy” (GBT) to our practice with the advanced technology system EMS Airflow Prophalaxis Master! This amazing science and technology was developed in Switzerland and is an absolute game-changer in the industry of dental hygiene!

What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy & How It Works

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is an 8-step evidence-based systematic protocol for cleaning teeth in a more effective, efficient, and comfortable way. GBT is truly minimally invasive and reduces the need for hand and sonic or ultrasonic instrumentation. It is safe, effective, and gentle to the teeth and soft tissues, implants, and restorations. It is efficient and time-saving.

We hope that our patients who may have been reluctant to visit the dental office for professional teeth cleanings will look forward to coming to see us with this new technology! And for our regular routine patients, this will be a nice treat for you as well!

Why GBT Is A Game Changer

After 50 years of cleaning teeth the same way, it is time for a change. A healthy mouth equals a healthy body. Dental biofilm is the main causative factor for cavities, periodontal (gum) disease, and infections. Periodontitis increases the risk of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes. As dental care clinicians, we want to remove this biofilm as thoroughly as possible without damaging or scratching teeth and enamel.

The GBT Process

First, your dental hygienist or assistant will apply disclosing solution to your teeth, which is a purple material that shows us exactly where the biofilm is in your mouth. This includes the plaque and buildup that may otherwise be difficult to detect. This will be our guide during your professional cleaning visit to all the areas that need addressing.

When the biofilm is made clearly visible to us, it can be removed much faster with GBT. This is also a great visual for our patients to see which areas they are missing at home with brushing and flossing.

Then, the Airflow unit delivers warm water with a very fine non-abrasive powder called erythritol to remove the biofilm from your teeth with minimal to no discomfort. It feels like a warm mist on your teeth.

This technique is so gentle that it can also be used on soft tissues such as the tongue, lips, and cheeks for a true total mouth cleaning. This powder is a natural antimicrobial and is safe for all dental surfaces, including enamel, dentin, porcelain, fillings, dental implants, orthodontic braces, and even Invisalign.

Advanced Technology & Comfortable Results

This advancement in technology allows us to minimize the hand instrumentation, which is the scraping or scaling, and eliminates the need for the messy, gritty polishing paste at the end of your cleaning because it automatically polishes your teeth at the same time. Airflow removes biofilm, early calculus, and stains on the enamel, and makes the tooth surface perfectly smooth. And last but not least, your teeth will also be one shade whiter.
